There’s a huge range of formulas across the short oval spectrum, and National Hot Rods are no exception. The racing has come a long way since the days of legends such as George Polley and Barry Lee, with cars more align with circuit racing machinery than those racing on ovals. Built on a spaceframe chassis and powered by race-tuned 16-valve engines running on slick racing tyres, racing at speeds usually unseen in the confined oval spaces. This non-contact sport is something special, with drivers circulating the ovals centimeters apart at full speed. We’ve spoken to young gun 524 Perry Cooke about his experience so far in the formula. His dad Mel raced for 25 years after his father, Perry’s grandad Kenny; “so I guess it’s in my blood!" says Perry. After a spell in karting from the age of 8 to 12, Perry knew it was time to move to the ovals, and then racing the Junior Rods at the age of 13.
